Our Golf Professional – Chris Akers

Chris took up golf at the age of 14 at Bankstown Golf Club. He played all his junior golf there representing the club in many teams from Encourage Shield all the way to Captaining the Major Pennants team. After finishing school, Chris undertook an IGI Golf Management course with the goal to advance his golfing career.

After having a successful amateur career consisting of Vardon event wins and winning the Eden Trophy at St Andrews, Scotland, Chris started the PGA Traineeship program at Bankstown. Over the next three years, Chris successfully completed the program excelling in playing and gaining invaluable experience in the areas of business management and club fitting. His interest in coaching increased as he was able to work with players of all levels and be part of their improvement. This gives him a level of enjoyment and feeling of success in seeing players achieve their goals.

After finishing his Traineeship and becoming a fully certified PGA member, Chris spent a year following his dream of playing, sharing his time between playing on the ADT Tour in Asia and the PGA tour of Australasia competing in events such as the Fiji International, NZ Open and the Australian PGA.

He then took up the offer to become the Shop Manager/Assistant Professional at Bankstown GC which he feels has helped complete his golfing training and help make him a well-rounded Professional. This is a role that he held for 5 years, before moving to Antill Park. During his time at Bankstown, he was known as a friendly face that would go out of his way to help both members and guests. He was part of a team that organised and ran fitting events, corporate events and a number of large club events. He also grew as a coach over this time enjoying being part of the journey of the golfers as they develop their games and improve. This lead to another of Chris’ passions and that is taking Members away on member’s trips. Chris has taken multiple groups to locations such as Barnbougle and King Island, Melbourne, Adelaide and even to Scotland, UK. He loves the interaction between the members and being able to not only give them an unforgettable golfing experience but building friendships at the same time.
